Biodegradation Residual of 4-Octylphenoxyacetic Acid in Laboratory Columns under Groundwater Recharge Conditions

ثبت نشده
چکیده

The biodegradation of 4-octylphenoxyacetic acid (OP1EC) was studied in laboratory columns to determine the residual concentration that can persist during groundwater recharge or transport. Biofilm models predict residual concentrations are independent of the initial concentration and residence time. Two column trains, constructed with glass beads and providing a residence time of 280 min were fed continuously with lake water (LW) containing biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and groundwater (GW) containing no biodegradable DOC. The feedwater was amended with OP1EC first at high (1 mg/ L) and then at low (50 μg L-1) concentration. To simulate mixing of recharged LW and regional GW, the effluents of the GW and LW train were blended and fed to a column (BW) with 114 min residence time. When the influent OP1EC concentration was 1000 μg/L the residual concentrations in the LW and GW trains ranged from 0.3 to 3 and 0.8 to 3 μg L-1, respectively. When the feed concentrations were decreased to 50 μg L-1, the residual concentration in the LW decreased to below the detection limit (<0.1 μg L-1) but stayed above 0.2 μg L-1 in the GW train effluent. Mixing the two LW and GW column effluents stimulated additional (up to 11%) dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal but no additional OP1EC degradation.

Forecasting of Groundwater Table and Water Budget under Different Drought Scenarios using MODFLOW Model (Case Study: Garbaygan Plain, Fars Province, Iran)

Groundwater drought is a natural hazard that develops when groundwater systems are affected by climatical drought, when climatical drought occures, first groundwater recharge, later groundwater levels and groundwater discharge decrease. The origin of drought is a deficit in precipitation and that takes place in all the elements that comprise the hydrological cycle (flow in the rivers, soil mois...

Enhanced anaerobic biodegradation of benzene-toluene-ethylbenzene-xylene-ethanol mixtures in bioaugmented aquifer columns.

Methanogenic flowthrough aquifer columns were used to investigate the potential of bioaugmentation to enhance anaerobic benzene-toluene-ethylbenzene-xylene (BTEX) degradation in groundwater contaminated with ethanol-blended gasoline. Two different methanogenic consortia (enriched with benzene or toluene and o-xylene) were used as inocula. Toluene was the only hydrocarbon degraded within 3 years...

Biologically Active Zone Enhancement (BAZE) Supplemental Study: Mass Balance of RDX Biotransformation and Influence of Aquifer Temperature on RDX Biodegradation in Groundwater

A series of column studies with site-specific aquifer material from the former Nebraska Ordnance Plant were performed to evaluate the influence of aquifer temperature on in situ hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5triazine (RDX) biodegradation, and to assess the ultimate fate of RDX in groundwater under biologically induced reductive conditions. In treatment columns RDX-contaminated water was amended...

Investigation of Hydrocarbon Phytoremediation Potential of Lupinus Chamissonis in Laboratory Microcosms

Controlled laboratory microcosms were used to research the phytoremediation potential of lupines (Lupinus chamissonis) for hydrocarbon-contaminated groundwater at a former oil field near Guadalupe, California. During oil production in the Guadalupe Oil Field, a kerosene-like hydrocarbon mixture was used as a diluent to improve the flow of the heavy crude oil. Leaking tanks and pipes resulted in...
